The Super Bowl is now history. It was a great game. I even heard that there were good commercials, even though I didn’t see any of them. But the event everyone seems to be talking about is the halftime show. Especially the part where MIA drops a slang word for a bodily function and gives America the finger. Nice touch. A lot of outstanding artists have performed at Super Bowls. It’s an honor to be chosen to perform before over 100,000,000 people at once – in fact, lately the Super Bowl halftime act has become like a lifetime achievement award for those who have impacted the world of music. Yet last night, someone chosen to play a supporting role in the show took the opportunity and became the big story by acting like an idiot. I find it quite humorous that NBC and the NFL have both apologized and are arguing with each other over whose fault this episode was. The reality is that neither is at fault. The person at fault is MIA. I am certain that well over half of the people watching the game had never heard of MIA until last night. But they’ve heard of her now. You only get one chance to make a first impression on someone. Hopefully we can all learn from her example and think about how we reflect Christ in our lives to the people that meet us for the first time.
Don’t forgets…

That was a SUPER week!!! Campaigners on Wednesday, Lunch with a good friend on Thursday, a fantastic Youth Quake Live on Friday, a sleepover Friday night, The Souper Bowl of Caring Service Blitz Saturday morning, CiCi’s pizza Saturday afternoon, a great day at church, and a our Super Bowl Party with tons of food!! Wesley and Anthony worked their tails off and had a great time at Dignity U Wear, and thanks to Mani, Matt, Hunter, and Will for helping with the Souper Bowl collection and to Mani for sorting and packing all the food. We collected 500 food items and $525!!!! And the Giants swept the weekend. The can drive was 171-16 and the cash war was $323-177. I guess that means that most of our givers were happy with the result of the game. It was good to see David last night and to welcome Delanie, Dreyton, Jonathan and Brian to our group for the first time. Colin brought Settlers of Catan which kept us entertained for three quarters of the game. Thanks to all who brought food and to Miss Betty for helping to set up and picking up the pizzas and wings and to Miss Selina for helping with the clean up. Only 365 days until Super Bowl XLVII.
Congrats to the Nease Orienteering Team – headed to Nationals!!! Stay focused!! We prayed for Andrew’s friend Dorial who just got a football scholarship to Missouri and for a safe Super Bowl - and continue to pray for Lydia and her family as they go through some bumps in the road.
We also still have room on the schedule to provide a few more meals for the Bragalones. We are still looking for about four more meals for them (four people – no onions or nuts please) this month. If you can help, please let me know as soon as possible. Chris is hanging in there – continue to keep him in your prayers.
Now that the Super Bowl is over, we can start winding down this winter, if you can even call it that. I heard that they had a Polar Plunge at Murabella Saturday. Not exactly Polar conditions – it was 81 degrees!!
This week we are off to play Laser Tag at Adventure Landing. It’s Family Night so we’ll need one adult for every three students. Cost will be $9 per person. That will cover the cost of the parent too. And we’ll stop for a snack on the way home. Departure time is 4:55 and we should be back around 11:45. You need to let me know by Wednesday if you are planning on joining us.
Then on Sunday we’ll be having Bible Study during the 11:00 service – Bring your Bibles. And then prepare yourself for our final glowstick night of the season Sunday night. We’ll also have another edition of Bananas. And we have a few prizes to give out from the Super Bowl.
And don’t forget that President’s Day Weekend, we will be going to St. Augustine for a Ghost Tour after Youth Group on the 19th. Cost is $14 per person and we need to have reservations in by Friday the 17th. PARENTS – MAKE NOTE – We would love to have you drive and join us – and if your child is NOT going, please be here to pick your child up by 6:55 p.m.
What’s Your Aim in Life? – To be sure of hitting the target, shoot first and call whatever you hit the target.
BAD TOM HUMOR – Police were called to a day care where a three year old was resisting a rest. (that’s for you Kayla and Kayci)
ADVICE FOR A GOOD LIFE – LESSON FOURTEEN – Remember that great love and great achievements involve great risk.
TRIVIA FOR PARENTS – Who had a 1976 hit with “Young Hearts Run Free”?
I’M GETTING CLOSE – We’ll be friends until we are old and senile. Then we’ll be new friends.
THE COFFEE LAW – As soon as you sit down to a cup of hot coffee, hot chocolate, or hot tea, your boss (or your spouse, or your parent) will ask you to do something which will last until your drink is cold.
Hmmmmm – Asking if computers can think is like asking if submarines can swim.
CHILDREN’S LETTERS TO GOD – “Dear God. If you give me a genie lamp like Alladin I will give you anything you want except my money or my chess set. Raphael”
